Sergio Vieira de Mello (Brazil), 55, was Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative for Iraq, taking a four-month leave of absence from his post as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR). Prior to his appointment in 2002 as High Commissioner, Mr. Vieira de Mello served as the head of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET), helping to shepherd the tiny Pacific nation to independence, and briefly held the position of Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Kosovo.
