He had previously served in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burundi and Somalia with various non-governmental organizations (NGOs), notably Mdecins du monde. A master of public management at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, United States of America, Mr. Kanaan had just written a book, Ma guerre l'indiffrence (My war against indifference) in which he voiced his commitment to the ideals of multilateral humanitarian and development aid, and criticized the methods and bureaucracies that jeopardized its effectiveness within NGOs as well as the United Nations. He was married to Laura and father of Mattia-Selim - then 3 weeks old.
